Ingres II Database Administration Course Outline

Overview

This course is aimed at students who will be responsible for managing an Ingres database (Ingres DBMS). It covers all aspects of database administration including:

  • managing database objects such as tables, indexes, applications and others
  • data integrity
  • security
  • backup and recovery
  • table maintenance and optimisation
The course does not focus on a particular operating system but uses examples for VMS, UNIX and Windows/NT operating systems throughout the course material. The workshops are performed under UNIX and sometimes under Windows/NT. Students in this course should strongly consider following with the "Ingres II System Administration" course.

Upon completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Describe the underlying database concepts such as architecture basics, transaction management and managing access control
  • Define the tasks peculiar to database administrators
  • Have a fundamental understanding of the Ingres II architecture
  • Enforce data integrity and security
  • Perform the backup and recovery of the database

 
Audience

Database and systems administrators responsible for the maintenance of Ingres databases.

 
Prerequisites

Completion of the Introduction to Ingres II (OI145) and Using Ingres II SQL (OI130) courses, or equivalent experience, together with experience of using an Ingres DBMS are the prerequisites for this course. A good understanding of the chosen operating system is also beneficial.

Instructor-led class consisting of lectures, demonstrations and hands-on lab exercises.
